Heroes

I had a bad presentation for my speech class some two weeks ago, on the topic of heroes. I didnt prepare much, considering that me and my friends were slacking, playing through the night on the PS2. Winning Eleven can be such an addiction sometimes, especially when you relish the look of disbelief on your friend's face when you score against him, even when you are the worst player ever. Suffice to say it was the hectic week, and the weird thing that i have is that i tend to be more slack once the pressure starts to build, to escape it all. Its one of my flaws, and it doesnt look like it is gonna change anytime soon.

That the problem with me. I run when the pressure starts. I remember when i didnt come for presentation in class. I was afraid of what would happen, so i put it aside, and not think about it, even not going for the tutorial class the next week. (ok, maybe that i had a valid reason. I was suitably drunk and ready for a huge hangover). The same thing happened when i was supposed to write an article. I was quite stressed out, and when i saw all the critques that my article had, it just turned me off completely, that i completely abandon the whole thing.

Sigh, suddenly, when i am supposed to just share what my Heroes speech would be about, i am sharing my flaws. Well done. Seriously well done.

Anyways, here is what i would have presented. Hopefully in a way that is attention grabbing. And this is pretty much impromptu on the fingers. I have a way of writing down things impromptu, but speaking them is a whole different ball game altogether.

Let's start, while i wait for my clothes to be finish their wash at the washing machine:

Heroes:
The good, the bad and the ugly

Think of heroes and who do you think of? I think of superman. Well, everyone knows that he is the world's superhero, with all the hype surrounding his last movie "Superman returns". But i wont be talking about superman, although i sometimes wished i was him. But we will get back to that fantasy later.

Heroes. Who are they and what do they do? In conventional sense, they are your typical Saviour, carrier of Justice, the Bringer of Light and Salvation etc. In conventional sense, they are the strong, the able, the talented, masters of their destiny, and the people's people. In conventional sense, they are far and rare in between, hiding amongst society, and coming out in times of need.

But that's just about skim the tip of the iceberg. What about unintentional heroes? Sudden heroes? Heroes that fights against 'Justice'? Anti-heroes? Or even your neighbour? I mean, how does he keep his lawn so nicely mowed, even when he has absolutely no time on his hands? Now that is something to thing about. But i digress.

Today i will talk about some of the heroes in the world, but not the conventional "i shall save the world, and prevent evil from raising" type, but your everyday heroes, and a few controversial ones.

I see both my parents as my heroes. As i grew older, i learned to appreciate what they are doing for me, working day in and day out just to help pay for my school fees. I remember my mum always fetches me and my siblings to Singapore almost everyday, waking up early just to get our asses off the bed and into the car, making breakfast for us, and never expecting much from us. She even makes the car more comfortable, with cosy pillows and nice little blankets so that we can sleep comfortably as we journey to Singapore. She did this for several years, ever since i was in secondary 3, without a single word of complain. She was so loving about it, that she even develop a small tumor on her knee, due to her sitting down in the car day in and day out. Luckily it was benign, but it didnt deter her from continue to fetch me and my siblings to school everyday. The care she has for us, that unconditional love that she gave us, that warmth in the cold morning, it made me feel very fortunate to have a mother like that, a person that i truly believe is a unintentional hero.

ok, i think i cant think of anymore things to say for my speech, cause it is so late at night already, and i am dead tired. But that was more fleshed out, and focused than the one i did. Rest assured, Verena, i will be back for the next speech assignment, which there is about eight topics to choose from, and most probably, i will be doing on Democracy, which i have tons to say, or maybe even White, creating a simple poetry and relating it to a story i read or something. Most probably it will be on democracy, so get your ear plugs ready, and check the room for any electronic bugs. I dont want the Government to come down on me once i finish my speech about democracy. Heh.

Hall productions in 1 week. Cant believe i have to burn away one whole recess week for that. Ah wells, life like that la, so Nancy says.

You will know when its time.
